Are you getting what you want in life? Why not? Tap along with Brad Yates in this video and clear what may be stopping you.
I am a great believer in the importance of loving yourself – because when you do, you naturally allow the best things into your life. And, you also naturally do the most good not only for yourself, but also for others. It’s a good thing.
I’ll often ask folks to close their eyes and, perhaps imagining themselves standing in front of a mirror, say, “I love myself.” Then I ask them to rate how true that feels on a scale of 0-10.
Go ahead and do that now.
So… how true does that statement feel…?
Of course, as they say, “the proof is in the pudding.”
(The actual proverb is, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating,” but that’s rarely what they say.)
Anyhow, do your actions correspond to your feeling? If you felt you love yourself at an 8, would you say that your self-care is also at an 8? Does your behavior reflect how much you care about yourself, or does it tell a different story?
With apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “How do I love me? Let me count the ways. I love me … er… umm… now, let’s see…”
I’d suggest that your behavior may be an even more accurate gauge of your true feelings about yourselves. As they say, “actions speak louder than words.” (They do say a lot of things, don’t they.)
I remember hearing Zig Ziglar ask something along the lines of:
“If you owned a racehorse valued in excess of a quarter of a million dollars, would you let it stay up all night eating junk food, smoking cigarettes and watching TV…?
How about a $10 dog? $5 cat…?
How about a billion dollar human body…?”
So… what does your behavior say about how you value yourself?
When I started out as an actor, my aunt (a professional actress herself) said, “Your body is the tool of your trade – keep it in top condition.”
No matter what business you are in, no matter what you do, your body is the vehicle within which you operate. How’s your maintenance plan?
And the fact is, self-care is pretty universal in our lives. If we are cheating ourselves in terms of how we take care of our bodies, we are probably cheating ourselves in many other areas, too. It’s been suggested that how we do anything is how we do everything…
Now, this is not intended to shame you in the least. You have been doing the best you could given your programming. You may not have been taught proper self-care as you were growing up. Even parents with the best of intentions may not be experts in things like proper nutrition. But no need to place blame. I’m bringing this issue up so that you take notice of it, and create an opening to make a positive change. Perhaps you’ve manifested this message as a reminder…
What unhealthy habitual behavior are you continuing to engage in, either ignoring the consequences, or rationalizing (rationalize = rational lies) why there’s no need for adjustment?
This past week, I took myself to task on this, really making the choice to be rigorous about not doing harm to myself in the subtle ways I use to excuse as “no big deal.” Rather than just saying I loved myself, and trying to get others to do the same, I committed to “putting my money where my mouth was,” as they also say. I really stepped up how I treat myself – letting go of some less-than-healthy habits, and taking on healthier habits. I started exhibiting more self-love that my body could appreciate.
Naturally, this involved some tapping. I had been doing the best I could given certain unconscious programs. I cleared some things that were blocking greater self-care. I’m not even really sure what all of them might have been. I tapped on, “I choose to treat myself better” and words to that effect, and just allowed whatever came up about that – like questions of deserving – and started releasing outdated ideas that no longer served me.
Simply making the decision to do so has been remarkable. I’ve exercised early each morning, and found it easier to start. I’ve noticed I’m drinking a lot more water. And I have had little or no interest in sweets. It feels really good.
And the results have not just been physical. I’ve seen positive shifts in other areas – including increased financial abundance coming in from unexpected areas. Sweet!
Of course, this makes sense. The Universe notices whether I believe I am worthy of my own positive action. How often, in our proclamations of things we wish to manifest, are we asking the Universe to treat us better than we are willing to treat ourselves…?
“God helps those who help themselves,” as they… well, you know.
Just for fun, I’m going to shift the earlier proverb to make an analogy, and say, “the proof is in the putting.”
Let’s say having great physical health was like having a great golf score.
Are the shots you are taking demonstrating this?
And then, when the ball rolls off the green and into a sand trap (or, in the case of not hitting it, just stays where it is) maybe you curse and insist visualizing doesn’t work…?
Visualizing is a powerful and important part of manifesting our desires. But as you may have heard – or noticed – the last six letters of Attraction spell Action.
Now, I’m not saying that in all areas of life every shot has to be done as perfectly as possible. Depending on your situation, you may allow yourself some indulgences. The golfer whose score is already really low may choose to have fun and try putting with his eyes closed for one stroke. (I can imagine some diehard golfers gasping at the thought…) Likewise, if you are taking good care of yourself physically, you may choose to treat yourself to dessert now and then. If you are honest with yourself, you’ll know where you need zero-tolerance, and where there’s wiggle room while still displaying self-care. Sometimes those treats are a way we show we love ourselves – we just need to be careful we don’t kid ourselves.
Love yourself enough to do your part to bring good things into your life.
Commit to taking action that demonstrates how much you love yourself. Let your behavior show that you value yourself.
You are worth it… but nuthin’!
On a final note, please know that this self-care isn’t selfish. The better you take care of yourself, the better able you are to be of service to others.
And, how we treat ourselves is probably a reflection of how we treat others. If we are mistreating ourselves, we may not be providing as much service to others as we’d like to think. Since we are all connected, how we treat ourselves does affect others (and how we treat them affects us).
If there are people who benefit from what you do (and there are… more than you know…) treat them with love by making sure you are able to keep doing it for a long time to come.
Knowing that I benefit from the good you do – at least on a global energetic level if not more directly – I THANK YOU for taking care of yourself.

“Does Emotional Freedom Technique work on complex issues of fame, shame, and pain? With Life Coach, Robert Smith.”
The following is an hour and twenty minute video with Robert which perfectly exemplifies the myriad of “suppressed” emotions and resistance that can flood to the surface during a tapping session. The volunteer thinks she is working on a lower back problem. It turns out to be a more complex issue where her emotions rapidly fluctuates from anger, sadness, shame, rage and deep sorrow. But towards the end, she finally realizes how angry she was and still “is” at her mother.
Her reaction and experience is quite common. You tap on one thing and then another thought or idea pops up. You may not think it is not related but your subconscious mind somehow links it to your current problem.
Before you watch this video, I will briefly describe Borrowing Benefits. This is an indirect healing technique where YOU the viewer or someone in the audience receives healing while tapping along on someone else’s problem.
First, write down in one or two sentences an issue you want to work on such as a headache, back pain, or your anxiety about a job interview. Keep the issue simple and specific. Then, gauge the intensity from ZERO to TEN. Zero means it is not a problem and 10 meaning it is the most intense. Set your issue aside physically and mentally and direct your attention to the other person and tap along. It doesn’t seem to matter if the issue addressed has nothing to do with your own because unconsciously you will release any emotions that match. Yes, I know. It sounds bizarre.
WARNING : Take full responsibility for your healing. If you decide to tap along, proceed with caution, because you might get triggered.
Video 1 - Do you relate to the feelings of shame, anger, and sorrow from your past?
Robert Smith is a life coach, speaker, and creator of “FASTER-EFT”. He is trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and Set Free Fast (BSFF). He is one of America’s leading experts on stress, spirituality, and healing. Robert is also known for his sense of humor, ability to simplify complex issues, and dynamic training style. Tap along with Brad Yates in this video and clear some fear and worry right now.
I almost called this article “The Other Terrorists”… but I was afraid that might scare people off… (you may want to tap while reading this…)
So… what do terrorists do? They terrorize you… they manufacture fear in order to manipulate you.
Naturally, we are opposed to this. Right…?
Well, at a certain level. We won’t tolerate people who intend to do us extreme physical harm. But what about emotional terrorism? On this level, we are more likely to just accept it and often go along with it.
Sometimes (gasp!) we even engage in it ourselves…!
Let’s look at the facts. Oftentimes, the media are terrorists – using fear to meet their goals. They try to scare us into taking certain actions, like watching the shows their advertisers have paid for.
“Coming up next: the special report on hidden killers in your home you can’t afford to miss!”
We’re now afraid to not watch the show. Even though it may have nothing to do with us, we’re afraid to risk it. And so we give up our time to watch it – along with the advertisements.
And the advertisers are often terrorists.
“Don’t kid yourself. If you don’t have our product, you can’t have the health, wealth and/or happiness you really should have.”
Now we’re afraid that we’re missing out. The advertising agency’s job is create a real emotional feeling that we need that product to be safe… even if it is just safe from the judgment of others.
Political messages…? Don’t even get me started. What percentage of political campaigning is designed to make you terrified to even consider voting for the other candidate/measure/proposition…?
But, while we talk about a war on terrorism, we accept these things as status quo.
Please – stop being afraid. We create our reality based on what we are feeling. Fear will not help you create the life you really want. Remember the last message of “The Secret”…
FEEL GOOD!
Feeling fear just isn’t feeling good. So stop giving into these subtler terrorists. Don’t let them scare you into doing or thinking what they want. Refuse to give in to their demands. Clear your fear and choose based on what you really want for your life.
That may mean turning off the TV more often, or being much more selective about what you read or listen to.
Now, saying, “Be not afraid,” does not mean, “Be not aware.” It just means being more selective. Much (if not most) of the stuff we ingest is pretty irrelevant to our daily living. Unless it is something we can actually do something about, we are just horrified spectators. And if that is what you like as entertainment, that’s a choice. I just want to encourage you to limit it, and do what you can to counterbalance it with positive stuff
Now… about that earlier comment about us engaging in it ourselves…? Have you ever threatened anyone? Raised your voice? Maybe even just a little bit…?
I’m sorry to say that, as a parent, I’ve used the line, “Do it or else…!” If I’m honest with myself, that’s terrorism, subtle as it may be. I’ve never struck my children – the worst “or else” is generally a time out from playing video games – which is arguable more beneficial, even if it seems like punishment. However, I’m still using fear to manipulate behavior
I realize I’ve opened myself up to judgment here, but my point in raising the idea that you may be engaging in this sort of terrorism is not to judge you. If you’ve done this, I’m not saying you are a bad person and should feel ashamed of yourself. I don’t even mean that the media or politicians or any of these folks are bad. We are all doing the best we can based on how we’ve been programmed to function.
My point is this – pay attention – notice the culture of fear that is so ingrained in us that we not only accept it but also participate in it – on both sides of the equation.
And that provides an opportunity.
The ultimate is to feel love. Sometimes it isn’t clear how to feel more of that. If we take the opportunity to look at the times we engage in fear, we can see where there is a chance to let that go and allow more love.
Imagine choosing what you watch, what you read, what you buy and how you vote based on love.
Imagine enrolling the people around you into how you would like things to be based on love.
I know – it sounds far fetched… maybe absolutely unrealistic. Most of us are so entrenched in the culture of fear that it may be hard to imagine things actually being done a different way.
But wouldn’t it be amazing…?
Start releasing your fears, and clearing the way for love. Forgive yourself if you slip due to old habits, then start again. Move towards something positive, rather than away from something scary.
Consider the possibilities of a world like that…
BE THE CHANGE.

My favorite description of Emotional Freedom Technique is “emotional acupuncture without needles.” Acupuncture is a 5,000 year old Chinese healing modality where optimum health hinges on good energy or vital force or “chi” flowing around the body. Needles are placed on specific energy points along the body’s meridian pathways to bring energetic “balance” to promote health and alleviate pain. Just think of these energy points and meridian pathways as another natural component or extension of our bodies. For example, we have the skeletal system, circulatory system, nervous system, and so on. Now, just add another layer called the meridian system where energy or “chi” flows. We can’t see it but it is there.
In a nutshell, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a energy based healing technique where you focus on feelings and release them by tapping on the meridian or energy points on your body. Consequently, balancing the your body’s energy system and dissolving the negative emotions. Emotional Freedom Technique was coined and developed by Gary Craig. EFT is actually a simplified version of Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy tapping technique. A key difference between the two is that EFT technique has one “universal” algorithm for all issues while Thought Field Therapy has several tapping algorithms depending on the type of problem.
The premise behind EFT is that “The cause of ALL negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” This means that traumatic events or bad memories don’t cause how we feel. Instead, unbalanced energy system or kink in our meridian system resulted by the event causes our negative emotions such as anger, fear, and grief. Therefore, if we balance our energy system in regards to a painful event or memory, our unwanted and uncontrollable emotions will dissipate.
Now, the basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear , a trigger, a painful memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that’s bothering you. It is a good idea before and after you start a tapping session to give it a rating from one – ten to track the intensity level. Then, give your problem a “title” or reminder phrase and some setup statements that describe the scope of your problem. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue ( with the reminder phrase), use your fingertips to gently tap 5-7 times each of designated meridian points on the body. Here is a real live demonstration of a simple issue with food cravings. Follow along with Jessica below as she uses EFT tapping to eliminate her intense chocolate cravings.
The diagram below are the energy points I tap on based on my EFT training. These demo videos on this page use all but two meridian points on the chart.
Components of Emotional Freedom Technique
E.F.T. Recipe
Sequence of meridian or energy tapping points during tapping process. The number, location, or starting point of these tapping points vary among practitioners.
Meridian Points
Acupuncture points on your body where you tap with your fingers during the tapping process. See figure 1.
Reminder Phrase
Short sentence or group of words or title that describes your problem. For example, “my ugly divorce”, “the accident in Greece”, or “the shame of my bankruptcy.”
Setup Statement
Declarative statements that describe your feelings or issues you are dealing with. For example, “Even though I have this headache, I choose to love and accept myself anyway.” Or ‘Even though, I am scared about my finances, I love an accept myself anyway.” These statements are intended to prepare your conscious mind of what you will addressing during the tapping process.
SUDS Level
Subjective Unit of Distress. It is an intensity meter. Zero for no distress. Ten is maximum unit of distress. Before each tapping session, you keep track of the intensity levels to gauge progress.
Emotional Freedom Technique has been in use since the late 1990′s. Numerous life coaches, doctors, hypnotherapists, psychotherapists, various holistic practitioners, and lay people have picked up EFT tapping and found results where traditional treatments or therapies has failed or had little effect. Some practitioners who have adapted emotional freedom technique into their practice have further developed it and enhanced its efficacy.
Here is a partial list of issues EFT technique can help you with :
a) Personal Performance
Weight Loss
Abundance
Athletic Achievement
Business & Career Goals
b) Emotional Challenges
Children’s Behavior
Relationship Issues
Anger Management
Depression
Insomnia
Severe Trauma (PTSD)
Addictions
Sexual Abuse
Phobias
c) Physical Disease
Allergies
Migraines
Pain Management
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Hypertension
Fibromyalgia
Cancer
Muscular Dystrophy
Parkinson’s Disease
Cystic Fibrosis
EFT tapping is a pretty straightforward. Getting results entails asking pertinent questions, making astute observations, and listening carefully to uncover the core issues underlying your emotional upset. And that comes with practice, experience, and persistence. I would like to stress the importance of finding the core causes of your problems – NOT what YOU think are the causes. Many people give up on tapping thinking it doesn’t work. Here are some reason why tapping may not work for some people because they : 1) quit prematurely because it is taking so long not realizing the gravity and scope of the problem and/or start reliving the pain unnecessarily because they lack the skills to use emotional freedom technique properly, 2) don’t realize that they didn’t clear the core issues of their problems, 3) unconsciously resist healing, 4) consciously yet secretly reject healing altogether. Bye the way, we must exercise free will here. It is waste of time to tap on issues with someone or on yourself if you flat out refuse to put genuine effort into the process.
Anyway, watch the following demonstration where Nick Ortner skillfully applies EFT tapping to assist Natasha release her chronic anxiety which she describes as a “gnawing feeling in her gut.”
Here are some advantages of using EFT Tapping Technique :

EFT tapping is a self help tool. It is not a quick fix gimmick and it is not intended to replace traditional therapies, medical treatments, or medical advice. It just seems to work better in the care of an experienced practitioner. The amount of time it takes to see results depends on the complexity of your issues. However, our body has a compelling ability for self-healing. When you can take control of that self-healing power with emotional freedom technique, it puts control over your destiny back into your own hands. To learn more click on the links below :

#1.Carol, what is your philosophy for helping people?
Carol Tuttle :
“Teach them tools that help them discover their truth and how to live in a state of more joy, abundance and happiness.”
#2.How did you first hear about EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique?
Carol Tuttle :
“I learned about EFT in it’s early origins. A colleague of mine told me about Gary Craig and his work, I looked it up, went to a training taught by Gary, met him personally and started writing articles for his website.”
#3.In a couple of sentences how would you describe EFT tapping technique to someone who has never heard of it before?
Carol Tuttle :
“EFT is a simple self-applied procedure that offers relief and healing when a person is feeling emotional discomfort and stress either physically, emotionally, and mentally. It is composed of a sequence of tapping on emotional acupressure points that comprise our mind-body energy system called meridians that the imbalanced energy is running through. The tapping helps release the imbalanced energy allowing it to return to a state of balance.”
#4.How long have you been using EFT tapping professionally?
Carol Tuttle :
“Over a decade.”
#5. What kind of issues do you like to help people most with EFT?
#6. What is the most profound shift you’ve ever witnessed using EFT tapping technique with your clients?
Carol Tuttle :
“A client of mine had been diagnosed for several years with chronic fatigue. She had spent thousands of dollars and seen the top specialists in the world to find a cure. After using EFT and other methods I taught her, her body was restored to a state of wellness within 4 months.”
#7. Do you use EFT tapping technique on yourself? How has it benefited you personally?
Carol Tuttle :
“Yes, it helps me maintain wellness and balance physically, emotionally, and mentally.”
#8. Does EFT tapping work for everybody? When have you seen it not work?
Carol Tuttle :
“At times, when a person has a deep seated belief that nothing helps them, and they might never get well, that can cause EFT to be ineffective unless they are tapping on that block and limiting belief.”
#9. Carol, you incorporate various energy healing techniques (including EFT tapping) in the Energy Healing 101 Kit. What was the purpose of this DVD?
Carol Tuttle :
“This Home Study Course that is comprised of over 15 hours of training, offers the newbie to Energy Healing as well as the advanced student an overview of some of the most popular Energy Healing modalities, how to do them and everyday situations they can be applied to.”
#10. And finally, what is the single most valuable tip you can share on how to use EFT tapping successfully, Carol?
Carol Tuttle :
“Make it a regular practice, even when life is going well and you are feeling great, tap in the positives! Don’t wait until life gets hard and painful to use this tool. “
“Forgiveness is the greatest and bloodiest battle but its final result is true Peace.” ~Oscar Basurto Carbonell

This is an email interview I did with Brad Yates, aka EFT Wizard. Brad Yates is a Hypnotherapist based out of the Sacramento area in California. The purpose of this interview was to get to know a bit more about the person behind the mind body healing work.
The response to my interview questions are unedited. Enjoy the interview. ~ Sandra Bradley
Note : The terms Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT, & EFT tapping are used interchangeably.
#1.Brad, what is your philosophy for helping people?
Brad Yates:
“I believe that there is greatness within everyone – and we are all worthy and deserving of abundance. I feel my job is to help folks release what gets in the way. The great artist Michelangelo stated that his statues were already there in perfect form – hidden inside the marble – and that his job was to simply chip away the pieces that didn’t belong. I feel the same way – we are tapping away what doesn’t belong.”
#2.How did you hear about Emotional Freedom Technique?
Brad Yates:
“I was introduced to it by a fellow hypnotherapist, who got me on an e-mail list of other hypnotherapists. There was a discussion of an Energy Psychology Conference that was about to take place, and I signed up for that, and the full-day training with EFT founder Gary Craig that took place the day before the conference.”
#3.How would you describe EFT tapping technique to newbies?
Brad Yates:
“I like the stand-by phrase, “It’s like emotional acupuncture, but without the needles.” Based on thousands of years of Chinese medicine, this technique helps balance the body’s natural energy system by stimulating key points on the face and torso. We feel emotions in our body, so it only makes sense that we use a physical approach to help relieve uncomfortable feelings.”
#4.How long have you been using EFT tapping professionally?
Brad Yates:
“I started introducing EFT into my hypnotherapy practice in 2000. Within a year, it was the main tool I was using.”
#5. What kind of issues do you like to help people most with EFT?
Brad Yates:
“I love helping people discover how wonderful they are – dispelling the old lie that they “aren’t good enough.” And while I’ve worked with many different issues, I believe this one is underneath most if not all other issues.”
#6. What is the most profound shift you’ve ever witnessed using EFT tapping technique with clients?
Brad Yates:
“I’ve witnessed so many profound shifts… it’s hard to say. Some that stick with me are the woman who was able to let go of the traumatic feelings from a 20 year old episode of molestation in a matter of minutes, and the woman who was able to laugh at how her husband served her divorce papers (on her birthday!). Sometimes the shift in the session doesn’t appear profound, but I will receive an e-mail later where a client shares something that has happened which evidences that something big has shifted. Sometimes it is in the form of financial gain, or career opportunity, or even a healthier way of handling a situation that used to be troubling.”
#7. Do you use EFT tapping technique on yourself? How has it benefited you personally?
Brad Yates:
“I work by phone, and am always tapping when working with a client, so I naturally benefit from the process. I also tap on my own, and on occasion work with a colleague. My life is very different – I’m much more proactive, I’m physically healthier, and have a much brighter outlook than I did before I started. For a specific example: I recently finished the children’s book I wrote over two years ago. I felt a lot of resistance to actually illustrating the book. I did a session with a friend, and cleared whatever was blocking me – the next week, I sat down and did over 40 drawings – more than twice what I had been fearing I’d have to do.”
#8. Does EFT tapping work for everybody?
Brad Yates:
“We all have the same meridian system in our bodies, so tapping is beneficial to everyone. However, depending on a person’s unconscious blocks to the results they consciously want, it might take a lot of persistence before seeing the benefits. And I completely understand that some folks will find it hard to persevere with an admittedly silly looking process when they aren’t getting tangible results. Sometimes it helps if someone tries another healing modality, then later comes back to try EFT again.”
#9. Brad, you have a product called Money Beyond Belief with Joe Vitale from the movie – “The Secret” . Can you tell us how you met Joe Vitale and why you decided to work together?
Brad Yates:
“It’s actually a great story of the Law of Attraction. Years ago, I had heard about Joe’s book Spiritual Marketing (later renamed The Attractor Factor), and had written to him about it. We had exchanged a couple of e-mails over the next few years. I then had a notion that I’d like to work with Joe on some project. I attracted a new client who happened to work for the company that marketed Joe’s coaching program at that time. I offered, through this client, to do a free teleseminar for that group. Joe wrote to thank me, and I responded, “Well, I’m doing it for two reasons…1) I love doing what I do, and 2) I’m really trying to get your attention.” He then asked if I’d like to be a guest on his “Attracting a New Car” teleseminar series – and actually had me on twice in the four calls. I later suggested we could take what we did there – adding the clearing step to the manifestation process – and do a whole teleseminar around that. He said, “Great – and I even have a name for it: “Money Beyond Belief !” It was a month or so later that he was asked to be in ‘The Secret.’ ”
#10. And finally, Brad. What is the single most valuable tip you can share on how to use EFT tapping technique effectively for emotional healing?
Brad Yates:
“The best way to get the most out of tapping is to start with what you are feeling in the moment. Even if you don’t know the words to say, allow yourself to be aware of whatever you are experiencing, whether it is a thought, and emotion or a physical sensation. If you still aren’t sure what to tap on, here’s where I like to go: Say to yourself, “I love myself,” and rate how true that feels on a scale of 0 – 10. TO whatever extent it isn’t a 10, ask yourself why not, and tap on those reasons. Tapping is like peeling the layers of an onion – just get started, and you’ll uncover what is underneath it all… experiencing greater levels of joy and freedom along the way. And you deserve that.”
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”~Michelangelo

Introduction. Lindsay Kenny explains impediments to Emotional Freedom Technique. www.lkcoaching.com
Somehow I’ve developed the moniker as “an authority on why EFT doesn’t work”. I don’t mind that, except that I believe that EFT tapping works 99% of the time…if done correctly. Yet many will try it once, throw up their hands and say “Well, it just didn’t work for me!” If that happens, it is rarely, if ever, any shortcoming of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).
It’s my experience that one of the primary reasons EFT appears not to be working resides in the skill of the practitioner (who is often the person treating him or herself).
EFT tapping technique is more of an art than a science, and we’re still learning how it works. We do know, however, these things for sure:
In the right hands EFT tapping can produce miraculous results.
Simple issues such as fears, stress, (recent) anger, pain, frustration and hundreds of other non-complex problems can often be eradicated in a few minutes with Emotional Freedom Technique.
multifaceted issues, such as trauma, chronic anxiety, abuse, serious illnesses, and depression may take longer and more skill than can be delivered by an EFT tapping novice.
Even someone new to EFT tapping technique can often get amazing results 70% of the time–that’s an extraordinary percentage that the medical profession would love to have.
EFT tapping often works when everything else has failed.
In skilled hands EFT tapping technique can work over 95% of the time.
And here’s the most important thing we’ve learned:
There are certain things that can stop EFT tapping in its tracks…which is the basis of this article.
Becoming aware of these stumbling blocks and knowing how to deal with each one will increase EFT’s effectiveness significantly, even for a beginner. Not being specific, not finding or resolving the core issue, not being sufficiently hydrated, and missing shifting aspects are just some of the reasons someone applying EFT tapping technique might not resolve an issue. We’ll deal with each of these obstacles and others later on in this article. But let’s start with a big one first…
1) Reversals
Reversals, often called Psychological Reversals or Polarity Reversals (PR), are what I believe to be the most overlooked obstruction to successful EFT (tapping) treatments. There is so much more to this phenomenon than we originally thought. When it appears that EFT is not working, a primary key to rapid and effective treatment often lies in identifying the different types of Reversals and in knowing how to neutralize them.
Dealing with Reversals up front is perhaps more important than any of the other impediments to EFT tapping technique. In fact, if Reversals are unrecognized and untreated they can stop EFT in its tracks, or at best make it dramatically more difficult and time consuming to resolve an issue. The good news is, once discovered, the solutions for correcting Reversals are amazingly simple and highly effective. My experience is that with most people dealing with simple issues, Reversals are not a problem. But for chronic or long-lasting problems, complex issues, and even serious illnesses, Reversals are all too common.
For those who have a Reversal, its discovery and elimination are paramount to a successful resolution of their problem. A good clue as to whether or not someone has a Reversal is if their 0-10 intensity level remains the same after a couple of rounds of tapping. There are other reasons why your intensity level may stay the same–other stumbling blocks–which we’ll address later on in this article. I break Reversals down into two basic types, each with several sub-categories.
A) General Polarity Reversals
The first type of Reversal is what I consider a General Polarity Reversal, or GPR. GPR can be caused from several factors:
Negativity – chronic negative thoughts, negative behavior, or negative events
Being around electrical devices for long periods of time
Addictions – addictive personalities or addictive substances in the body
Depression – chronic depression causing the body’s energy system to become slow or sluggish.
Performing the standard set-up procedure (rubbing the sore spot or karate chop point while saying the set-up statement) will often fix negativity or electrical GPRs. Addictions- or depression- caused GPRs, however, are not usually eliminated just by doing the set-up statement and require additional work as detailed in the next section on SBS.
General Polarity Reversal simply means that the electricity or energy in the body is “agitated”, or “going in the wrong direction”. Therefore the polarity is reversed. Think of the experiment in grade school where you used a magnet to attract tiny particles of metal on a piece of paper. The positive end of the magnet pulled the particles toward it, aligning them up neatly, all going in the same direction. Then, when the negative end of the magnet was directed toward the metal shavings, it caused the particles to repel from the magnet, scattering and separating them in all different directions. In a sense, that’s what happens to our body’s energy when a negative force, like those listed above, is introduced into the system.
Another way to look at our body’s energy field or polarity is to compare it to batteries in a tape recorder, flashlight, or other battery-operated devices. The batteries that run the gadget must be installed with the positive and negative polarity seated in the correct direction. If not, the device simply won’t work. Since your body has its own “electrical system” your “batteries” need to be positioned correctly for you to function properly. If your polarity is all scrambled up, you have a GPR Reversal and it’s likely EFT tapping will not work for you until the Reversal is corrected (which we’ll cover in a moment).
B) Secondary Benefit Syndrome or SBS
This is the second and more common type of Reversal. The SBS reversal occurs when the subconscious mind perceives that it is better or safer to keep an issue (like negative emotions, chronic pain, extra weight, or a bad habit), than to eliminate it. Or, as the movie “What the *#@!# Do We Know?” demonstrates, our bodies can actually becomeaddicted to a negative emotion or issue.
After a period of time we may become so accustomed to being angry, hurt, anxious, victimized, etc. that our body is reluctant to let the emotion go. The negative condition may be uncomfortable, but if we have been in that state for awhile, it begins to feel “natural” to the body and the subconscious mind.
Since SBS is seldom a conscious choice, most people will initially disagree with you if you tell them that subconsciously they don’t actually want to get rid of their problem or issue. Of course most people don’t consciously want to stay emotionally upset or physically in pain. But the subconscious is a powerful entity, usually exhibiting dominance over our conscious desires.
For someone who has carried around a trauma, chronic pain, phobia or other issue for many years the emotion becomes a part of his or her personality or even his or her identity. How often have you heard phrases like “He’s an angry young man” or “She’s just such an anxious person”? Overcoming or losing that “identity” can be very threatening to the non-rational subconscious mind.
For instance, the subconscious might be thinking…”If I get over this issue…”
“…I won’t have an excuse anymore for my life not working.”
“…It might be scary.”
“…I may not know who I am anymore.”
“…It may not be safe to let it go.”
“…I won’t know how to act as a functional, non-victim person.”
“…I won’t get the attention or sympathy I get now.”
If someone has been trying to lose weight for a long time, for instance, and hasn’t been successful, they are almost certainly reversed on it. Consciously they want to lose weight, but their big, stubborn subconscious may be saying “Wait a minute here. If I lose weight my clothes won’t fit and I’ll be deprived of the foods I love. And what if I lose that 40 pounds and I still don’t get that promotion I need, the guy I’m lusting after or the friends I want? Maybe if I lose that weight I’ll be so attractive to men that I’ll be abused or harassed again. Or what if my chubby friends abandon me and what if I get skinny but am still not pretty? Geez, losing weight is just not worth it, so I’ll just stay fat.”Once again, remember, this is the subconscious mind wielding control over what we consciously want.
Compare On subconscious manifestation blocks: Secondary Gain: Keeping Your Reality From Manifesting.
As long as the subconscious is unwilling to let the problem go (that’s a Reversal) it’s very hard to resolve an issue, with or without EFT. When I hear someone say “I’ve had this ________ for years and have tried everything” the word Reversal comes to mind immediately. Personally, I like to use muscle testing to demonstrate this phenomenon. I have the client make a positive statement such as “I really want to let go of this anger at dad.” When I muscle test them while they say that their arm will test weak. They protest, of course, saying, “But I really DO want to get over it!” And they do at the conscious level.
We then do the Reversal correction or neutralization, then test them again, and they’re strong (see Resolving SBS below). This amazes people almost as much as EFT. It physically demonstrates an otherwise hard-to-grasp notion. People are often skeptical of this concept until we neutralize the Reversal, perform EFT tapping and they see the once stubborn issue miraculously disappear.
RESOLVING SBS
The good news is it’s very easy to fix an SBS reversal–so easy that people find it hard to believe. Here’s how it’s done: Simply tap on the karate chop point (KC= base of little finger against base of the other little finger) using a reversal phrase such as “Even though….”
“…I don’t really want to get over this depression (trauma, chronic pain, etc.) I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“…It may not be safe to get over my issues…. (use your actual problem, not the word ‘issue’)…”
“…I may not deserve to get over this issue…”
“…I won’t know how to act if I get well…”
“…I won’t have an excuse for my life being messed up…”
“…I don’t want to forgive the people that ruined my life…”
“…I don’t want to be ‘normal’…”
“…I’m afraid this won’t work and I’ll never be well…”
“…For whatever reason, I don’t want to overcome this problem…”
I almost always use at least the first and last of these choices which usually catches everything in between. “Not deserving” to get over something is also a biggie, so try it if it fits, along with any of the others. They’re free and they can’t hurt. You’ll know the Reversal neutralization worked when you start doing EFT tapping again and begin getting results. Reversals can be a huge stumbling block, but they are so easily remedied that we needn’t let them stand in the way.
Remember, fixing a Reversal does not fix the issue. It only gets rid of the impediment to fixing the issue. You still need to do EFT tapping as normal after fixing a Reversal–i.e., set-up and tapping sequences.
As I stated in the beginning, Reversals are only onestumbling block to a successful Emotional Freedom Technique treatment, but it is often the one that causes people to say, “I tried EFT, but it just didn’t work for me”. I hate it when that happens.
“I’ve learned that I get blocked when my subconscious mind is telling me that I’ve taken the work in a wrong direction, and that once I start listening to what my subconscious is trying to tell me, I can work out the problem and get moving again.”

The following video shows EFT Master and Life Coach, Lindsay Kenny, demonstrating how you can find out if you have any reversals. Lindsay employs a technique called muscle testing (which is also refered as energy testing or applied kinesiology) to tap into the subsonscious mind to retreive more accurate answers or information.

Your inner healing process will take you places in your mind you didn’t even know existed. I know because I have to constantly address resistance of some kind when I tap. The truth is hard to deal with sometimes and our mind just protects us from the pain by sheltering it from us. Then, how can you deal with something you can’t confront? This is where I think EFT tapping is such a powerful technique. You can address resistance directly or indirectly. And that is why EFT tapping is one of my favorite and most powerful tools to release negative emotions, beliefs, and resistance.
Anyway, let this article be a useful tip for all EFT tapping enthusiasts when you are stuck. You can learn more about the other stumbling blocks to EFT tapping by visiting Lindsay Kenny’s website and explore her collection of downloadable tele-classes and e-books on emotional freedom technique.

Once in a while I’ll come across a person who would rather stay stuck than change their life that is not working. It’s a sad choice, but too often true.
One particular client, “Ken”, comes to mind who had a strange sexual fetish that he really didn’t want to let go of. He finally admitted he was only seeing me at his wife’s insistence and that he didn’t want to change at all. PERIOD. He liked his fetish and wasn’t about to give it up. Fine with me. So I sent him home to deal with his wife.
Another client, “Jerry”, had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He had a severe phobia of germs and therefore washed his hands hundreds of times a day. He also showered and washed his hair several times a day. Furthermore he made his family follow the same procedures in order for them to remain “clean and acceptable”. If they didn’t bathe every time they entered the house he considered them “filthy and disgusting”.
The rest of the family very much wanted Jerry to get help and eliminate his compulsions. But when Jerry first started talking to me he made it clear that he actually liked the attention and feeling special and didn’t want to get over his OCD. When I asked if he’d like to at least get over his fear of germs he replied “No, no! Being afraid of germs keeps me safe and alive, so I don’t want to let that fear go.”
This wasn’t a Reversal, this was a choice. He didn’t want to change and admitted he didn’t even want to want to change. I don’t feel it’s my responsibility to try to talk someone into changing. I may offer my opinion and make suggestions. However, I feel I have an obligation to respect someone’s right to choose for themselves unless it involves harming themselves or others.
One of my very first phone clients was “Betty” who had been a victim so long it had become a part of her identity. She had experienced a lot of sadness in her life; she had survived breast cancer and a double mastectomy, had a brother who was brutally murdered, her parents were holocaust survivors, her husband left her for a younger woman, her son lost a leg in a car accident, she was fired from her job, etc. It seemed her life was an endless tragedy and understandably her attitude was extremely negative.
She actually whined when she talked and answered most questions with a negative response such as “OK I’ll try, but it won’t work–nothing ever does.” In our tapping we just weren’t getting anywhere. I’d already tried finding the core issues, being specific, etc. I asked her “Betty, do you really want to feel better and have your life work?” She calmly said “I’ve been this way so long I don’t think I’d know how to act if things were going right for me.”
Silly me, I was a newbie and remained undaunted, trying hard anyway. I continued with other approaches like “Tell me how your life would be different if your life was working and things were really clicking.” She said “I can’t even imagine that, and even if things were going my way, I’d just f— it up again anyway. I always do.” I eventually asked her “Do you want me to continue to try to help you?”To which she said, “No, not really. I have all I need.” When I asked her what that was she said “Sympathy and attention of friends who feel sorry for me and want to help me”. She had been telling me that in different ways for an hour. Finally, I got that she really meant it. So I wished her well and sent her on her way.
The point is that you can’t help someone if they really don’t want to be helped. This is different than people who are Reversed or skeptical about Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. You don’t have to believe in or understand Emotional Freedom Technique for it to work. Some of the biggest fans of EFT tapping technique now were skeptics at first (like me). As long as someone wants to change, EFT tapping can work for them. If they’re not motivated they will not cooperate. Accordingly, you will have an uphill battle on your hands and you are not likely to get very far.
Honestly, it is heart breaking to see friends and family suffering needlessly, but it is not our responsibility in most cases to intervene. Besides, you can’t help anyone especially if they don’t want the help and they are closed to trying any new healing techniques in the first place. Believe me I have tried to convince people to at least try this EFT tapping technique.
For example, I know of someone who repeatedly creates drama in her life. She often sulks about how her life “sucks” and she balked at the idea of using EFT tapping. Out of frustration, I told her one day that it is going to take her to hit rock bottom before she does anything about it. She smiled and replied, “Well, I guess I haven’t hit rock bottom yet.” I was surprised by her response but she was absolutely right. She is not motivated to do anything to change her emotional and physical state even though she complains about it.

Step One: To calm an overactive mind. Place your fingertips on your forehead, above each eye.
Press firmly for three to four minutes while taking some deep breaths.
Repeat aloud or in your mind: “I am okay no matter what happens. Everyone else is going to be okay no matter what happens.” Release your hands and shake them gently for a moment or two.
Step Two: To clear tension and other burdens with a “spinal flush.” We carry a lot of stressful energy on our backs, which can develop into back problems. This technique is better if you have someone do it to you, and then you do it to them. Stand behind the person receiving the “flush.” Place your fingers at the top of their spinal column where the neck meets the back. Swipe your finger down the spinal column and off the tailbone, using the same movement you would use to swipe a credit card through a machine. Repeat the swiping motion four to five times-flushing off the stressful energy. The person receiving the “flush” will start to feel tingly inside.
Step Three: To calm your “fight and flight” energy. With so much media attention on war and violence, our “fight and flight” energy is in overdrive. Some of the residual effects of too much “fight and flight” energy can be immune system problems such as chronic fatigue, irritability, depression, anger, and exhaustion. The energy pathway that controls the “fight and flight” energy moves up and around each ear. To sedate and calm this energy, place your fingertips in front of each ear and, while pressing gently, smooth your fingers up and over the ears and off the back of your neck. Repeat this five to six times while taking some deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Bonus Tip: Protect yourself from the negative energy of others. Our energies are magnetic in nature. Emotion is energy in motion. We can attract energy to us-including the energy of people we do not even know-when we are not safeguarded from it.
Children process a lot of negative energy for their parents. If you are feeling stressed, your child is intuitively aware of that and can play a role of trying to “please” or “act-out” in response to the negative energy you are running.
Your central meridian is one of your primary energy pathways that runs from your pubic bone up to your bottom lip. It is like a radio receiver that channels other people’s negative thoughts and emotions into you. Pretend you have a zipper running up your torso between these two points. Zip up your central meridian, starting at your pubic bone until you reach your bottom lip. Zipping up your central meridian will “zip-up” your energy. You will feel more confident and positive about yourself and your world, think more clearly, and protect yourself from the negative energies around you. Zip up your children before they go to school.
