Tapping Insider’s Club : What exactly is Emotional Freedom Technique?

Introduction : Jessica Ortner, Tapping Solution & Tapping Insider’s Club, presents an overview of the Emotional Freedom Technique.

My favorite description of Emotional Freedom Technique is “emotional acupuncture without needles.” Acupuncture is a 5,000 year old Chinese healing modality where optimum health hinges on good energy or vital force or “chi” flowing around the body. Needles are placed on specific energy points along the body’s meridian pathways to bring energetic “balance” to promote health and alleviate pain. Just think of these energy points and meridian pathways as another natural component or extension of our bodies. For example, we have the skeletal system, circulatory system, nervous system, and so on. Now, just add another layer called the meridian system where energy or “chi” flows. We can’t see it but it is there.

In a nutshell, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a energy based healing technique where you focus on feelings and release them by tapping on the meridian or energy points on your body. Consequently, balancing the your body’s energy system and dissolving the negative emotions. Emotional Freedom Technique was coined and developed by Gary Craig. EFT is actually a simplified version of Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy tapping technique. A key difference between the two is that EFT technique has one “universal” algorithm for all issues while Thought Field Therapy has several tapping algorithms depending on the type of problem.

The premise behind EFT is that “The cause of ALL negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” This means that traumatic events or bad memories don’t cause how we feel. Instead, unbalanced energy system or kink in our meridian system resulted by the event causes our negative emotions such as anger, fear, and grief. Therefore, if we balance our energy system in regards to a painful event or memory, our unwanted and uncontrollable emotions will dissipate.

Now, the basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear , a trigger, a painful memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that’s bothering you. It is a good idea before and after you start a tapping session to give it a rating from one – ten to track the intensity level. Then, give your problem a “title” or reminder phrase and some setup statements that describe the scope of your problem. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue ( with the reminder phrase), use your fingertips to gently tap 5-7 times each of designated meridian points on the body. Here is a real live demonstration of a simple issue with food cravings. Follow along with Jessica below as she uses EFT tapping to eliminate her intense chocolate cravings.

Tapping Demo 1 : Jessica Ortner, Tapping Solution & Tapping Insider’s Club, eases her intense craving for chocolate with EFT technique.
The diagram below are the energy points I tap on based on my EFT training. These demo videos on this page use all but two meridian points on the chart.

Components of Emotional Freedom Technique

E.F.T. Recipe
Sequence of meridian or energy tapping points during tapping process. The number, location, or starting point of these tapping points vary among practitioners.
Meridian Points
Acupuncture points on your body where you tap with your fingers during the tapping process. See figure 1.
Reminder Phrase
Short sentence or group of words or title that describes your problem. For example, “my ugly divorce”, “the accident in Greece”, or “the shame of my bankruptcy.”
Setup Statement
Declarative statements that describe your feelings or issues you are dealing with. For example, “Even though I have this headache, I choose to love and accept myself anyway.” Or ‘Even though, I am scared about my finances, I love an accept myself anyway.” These statements are intended to prepare your conscious mind of what you will addressing during the tapping process.
SUDS Level
Subjective Unit of Distress. It is an intensity meter. Zero for no distress. Ten is maximum unit of distress. Before each tapping session, you keep track of the intensity levels to gauge progress.

Emotional Freedom Technique has been in use since the late 1990′s. Numerous life coaches, doctors, hypnotherapists, psychotherapists, various holistic practitioners, and lay people have picked up EFT tapping and found results where traditional treatments or therapies has failed or had little effect. Some practitioners who have adapted emotional freedom technique into their practice have further developed it and enhanced its efficacy.

Here is a partial list of issues EFT technique can help you with :

a) Personal Performance

  • Weight Loss
  • Abundance
  • Athletic Achievement
  • Business & Career Goals

b) Emotional Challenges

  • Children’s Behavior
  • Relationship Issues
  • Anger Management
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Severe Trauma (PTSD)
  • Addictions
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Phobias

c) Physical Disease

  • Allergies
  • Migraines
  • Pain Management
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Hypertension
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Cancer
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Cystic Fibrosis

EFT tapping is a pretty straightforward. Getting results entails asking pertinent questions, making astute observations, and listening carefully to uncover the core issues underlying your emotional upset. And that comes with practice, experience, and persistence. I would like to stress the importance of finding the core causes of your problems – NOT what YOU think are the causes. Many people give up on tapping thinking it doesn’t work. Here are some reason why tapping may not work for some people because they : 1) quit prematurely because it is taking so long not realizing the gravity and scope of the problem and/or start reliving the pain unnecessarily because they lack the skills to use emotional freedom technique properly, 2) don’t realize that they didn’t clear the core issues of their problems, 3) unconsciously resist healing, 4) consciously yet secretly reject healing altogether. Bye the way, we must exercise free will here. It is waste of time to tap on issues with someone or on yourself if you flat out refuse to put genuine effort into the process.

Anyway, watch the following demonstration where Nick Ortner skillfully applies EFT tapping to assist Natasha release her chronic anxiety which she describes as a “gnawing feeling in her gut.”

Tapping Demo 2a : Nick Ortner, Tapping Solution & Tapping Insider’s Club, demos EFT technique for Natasha’s anxiety problem.

Tapping Demo 2a : Nick Ortner, Tapping Solution & Tapping Insider’s Club, dissolves Natasha’s anxiety in her gut with EFT technique.

Here are some advantages of using EFT Tapping Technique :

  • No surgical procedures
  • No needles
  • No pills or chemicals
  • No pushing or pulling on the body
  • Easy to Learn
  • Rapid Results
  • Permanent Results
  • Versatile
  • Self-help Method
  • Works on Adults & Children
  • Works on Animals Too

EFT tapping is a self help tool. It is not a quick fix gimmick and it is not intended to replace traditional therapies, medical treatments, or medical advice. It just seems to work better in the care of an experienced practitioner. The amount of time it takes to see results depends on the complexity of your issues. However, our body has a compelling ability for self-healing. When you can take control of that self-healing power with emotional freedom technique, it puts control over your destiny back into your own hands. To learn more click on the links below :

Emotional Healing Expert : EFT Tapping Master, Lindsay Kenny

Lindsay Kenny EFT Tapping Technique Expert

This is an email interview I did with Lindsay Kenny, EFT Master, who is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Ca. The purpose of this interview was to get to know a bit more about the person behind the energy healing work. The response to my interview questions are unedited. Enjoy the interview and I hope it inspires you.

The terms Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT, & EFT tapping are used interchangeably. ~ Sandra Bradley

#1. Lindsay, what is your philosophy for helping people?

Lindsay Kenny:

“I’ve always been interested in helping others…even when I was a little girl. Maybe it was because I needed help myself. I just know that nothing makes me feel better than knowing I’ve helped someone else have peace of mind, increased confidence or joy in life. To me, that’s what it’s all about.”

#2. How did you hear about Emotional Freedom Technique?

Lindsay Kenny:

“I simply looked in the phone book for a therapist who could help me with severe depression. The book opened up to the exact page I needed, and my eyes fell on a therapist who listed the things I was going through. It turned out that I was probably her very first client in EFT. She was a marriage and family counselor who had just learned the basics of tapping the weekend before. She struggled through the process with me, and we both thought it was weird. I didn’t even know what it was called or what had just happened. I just knew I felt 100% better when I left and that my life had dramatically changed.”

#3. How would you describe EFT tapping technique to newbies?

Lindsay Kenny:

“Tapping is simply helping the body let go of negative emotions by stimulating the energy system, where emotions are trapped. The vibration from tapping on energy points creates a vibration within the energy pathways (meridian) that allows a negative emotion to quickly dissipate. If I had three sentences I would go on to say it’s a little magical, and it really works.”

#4. How long have you been using EFT tapping professionally?

Lindsay Kenny:

“10 years.”

#5. What kind of issues do you like to help people most with EFT?

Lindsay Kenny:

“I’ve worked on virtually every imaginable issue and negative emotion. However, what comes up most often is also what I like the most, and that’s “being stuck” issues, relationships, self-esteem issues, fears and beliefs, prosperity and abundance and personal performance. I also invest a lot of time in working with aspiring practitioners and trainers. I simply want people to be their best.”

#6. What is the most profound shift you’ve ever witnessed using the EFT tapping technique with clients?

Lindsay Kenny:

“This is a tough one, because I’ve witnessed so many extraordinary shifts. However one lady came to me a few years ago with a mess of seemingly insurmountable problems. She had lost her job, her fiancé, her health, energy, her sense of self-worth and even her will to live…all within a month or two.”

“She had so many health and emotional issues that it took two pages to list them. Yet with tapping, and in less accumulative time invested than it would take to do your taxes, she was back on her feet. Within two months she had establish a great new career, had regained her health, had a new love interest and was solidly confident, energetic and happy. It almost seemed like magic, as I mentioned above. All she had going for her in the beginning was a tiny willingness to overcome her obstacles. She came to me a shattered, dejected woman, and soon was and is living the life of her dreams. It was a huge turn around for her and a blessing for me to help her with it.”

#7. Do you use EFT tapping technique on yourself? How has it benefited you personally?

Lindsay Kenny:

“Heavens yes! Tapping makes life so much easier. I had a pretty good life already, but I wasn’t feeling very good about myself. After tapping away the negativity of my childhood and other issues, I created an ideal life and feel great about who I’ve become.”

“Tapping helps to instantly neutralize bumps that could grow into mountains if allowed to fester. One of the biggest advantages of tapping is having this extraordinary tool available, literally at my fingertips, to tap away problems as they arise.”

#8. Does EFT tapping work for everybody?

Lindsay Kenny:

“No, I don’t think it works for everyone across the board. It can work on babies, the elderly, animals and even those in a coma. The success rate is so high (up to 98% when it’s used by a competent practitioner) that it seems like it works for everyone. However, it really doesn’t. Still, just about anyone in any business or industry, including the medical field, would love to have a 98% success rate.”

“When doesn’t it work? Tapping often doesn’t work if someone is heavily medicated, drunk, or otherwise mentally compromised. Also, tapping isn’t likely going to help someone if they consciously don’t want to change or let go. I’ve had clients who came to me saying they wanted to quit smoking or drinking, but later admitted that they only came in to get someone else off of their back. They didn’t really want to quit, so their results were minimal. It does work, however, even if someone doesn’t believe it will.”

#9. Lindsay, you have quite a collection of downloadable tele-classes and articles on your website. Which one is your favorite for emotional healing and why?

Lindsay Kenny:

“Again, this is a difficult choice because I have such a broad spectrum of products covering just about every issue. However, the audio that seems to have helped more people and is the most popular is my “Bundling Baggage” teleclass. This process, which I developed about 6 years ago, helps someone neutralize all of the negativity from any segment of their life…usually in a matter of minutes.”

“Letting go of childhood pain, beliefs, fears and negative emotions seems to be the best use of this technique. The formative years, before the age of 7 are where most of our problems originate. The Bundling Baggage technique can help eliminate any group of repetitive, similar negative events. It’s yet another example of the magic of tapping.”

#10. And finally, Lindsay. What is the single most valuable tip you can share on how to use EFT tapping technique effectively for inner healing?

Lindsay Kenny:

“Finally, an easy question to answer. I think the most valuable thing to know about tapping, by far, is that it will work so much better if you neutralize any subconscious resistance to change before you start the tapping process. All of us have a little inner voice saying “But I don’t WANT to!” which we call a Reversal. That voice, our subconscious, is far more powerful than our conscious will or determination. So a simple procedure to quiet that resistance, or Reversal, will go a long way toward helping the tapping process work more efficiently and effectively, and it’s so easy to do. Your readers can learn about Reversals and how to neutralize them on the Free Stuff page of my website at www.LKcoaching.com

This article is an excerpt from “Emotional Freedom Techniques: The 9 Stumbling Blocks That Keep EFT From Working and How to Remedy Them–A 9 Part Series”, written by Lindsay Kenny, EFT Master

Part 1: Reversals, By Lindsay Kenny

Introduction. Lindsay Kenny explains impediments to Emotional Freedom Technique. www.lkcoaching.com

Somehow I’ve developed the moniker as “an authority on why EFT doesn’t work”. I don’t mind that, except that I believe that EFT tapping works 99% of the time…if done correctly. Yet many will try it once, throw up their hands and say “Well, it just didn’t work for me!” If that happens, it is rarely, if ever, any shortcoming of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

It’s my experience that one of the primary reasons EFT appears not to be working resides in the skill of the practitioner (who is often the person treating him or herself).

EFT tapping technique is more of an art than a science, and we’re still learning how it works. We do know, however, these things for sure:

  • In the right hands EFT tapping can produce miraculous results.
  • Simple issues such as fears, stress, (recent) anger, pain, frustration and hundreds of other non-complex problems can often be eradicated in a few minutes with Emotional Freedom Technique.
  • multifaceted issues, such as trauma, chronic anxiety, abuse, serious illnesses, and depression may take longer and more skill than can be delivered by an EFT tapping novice.
  • Even someone new to EFT tapping technique can often get amazing results 70% of the time–that’s an extraordinary percentage that the medical profession would love to have.
  • EFT tapping often works when everything else has failed.
  • In skilled hands EFT tapping technique can work over 95% of the time.

And here’s the most important thing we’ve learned:

  • There are certain things that can stop EFT tapping in its tracks…which is the basis of this article.

Becoming aware of these stumbling blocks and knowing how to deal with each one will increase EFT’s effectiveness significantly, even for a beginner. Not being specific, not finding or resolving the core issue, not being sufficiently hydrated, and missing shifting aspects are just some of the reasons someone applying EFT tapping technique might not resolve an issue. We’ll deal with each of these obstacles and others later on in this article. But let’s start with a big one first…

1) Reversals

Reversals, often called Psychological Reversals or Polarity Reversals (PR), are what I believe to be the most overlooked obstruction to successful EFT (tapping) treatments. There is so much more to this phenomenon than we originally thought. When it appears that EFT is not working, a primary key to rapid and effective treatment often lies in identifying the different types of Reversals and in knowing how to neutralize them.

Dealing with Reversals up front is perhaps more important than any of the other impediments to EFT tapping technique. In fact, if Reversals are unrecognized and untreated they can stop EFT in its tracks, or at best make it dramatically more difficult and time consuming to resolve an issue. The good news is, once discovered, the solutions for correcting Reversals are amazingly simple and highly effective. My experience is that with most people dealing with simple issues, Reversals are not a problem. But for chronic or long-lasting problems, complex issues, and even serious illnesses, Reversals are all too common.

For those who have a Reversal, its discovery and elimination are paramount to a successful resolution of their problem. A good clue as to whether or not someone has a Reversal is if their 0-10 intensity level remains the same after a couple of rounds of tapping. There are other reasons why your intensity level may stay the same–other stumbling blocks–which we’ll address later on in this article. I break Reversals down into two basic types, each with several sub-categories.

A) General Polarity Reversals

The first type of Reversal is what I consider a General Polarity Reversal, or GPR. GPR can be caused from several factors:

  • Negativity – chronic negative thoughts, negative behavior, or negative events
  • Being around electrical devices for long periods of time
  • Addictions – addictive personalities or addictive substances in the body
  • Depression – chronic depression causing the body’s energy system to become slow or sluggish.

Performing the standard set-up procedure (rubbing the sore spot or karate chop point while saying the set-up statement) will often fix negativity or electrical GPRs. Addictions- or depression- caused GPRs, however, are not usually eliminated just by doing the set-up statement and require additional work as detailed in the next section on SBS.

General Polarity Reversal simply means that the electricity or energy in the body is “agitated”, or “going in the wrong direction”. Therefore the polarity is reversed. Think of the experiment in grade school where you used a magnet to attract tiny particles of metal on a piece of paper. The positive end of the magnet pulled the particles toward it, aligning them up neatly, all going in the same direction. Then, when the negative end of the magnet was directed toward the metal shavings, it caused the particles to repel from the magnet, scattering and separating them in all different directions. In a sense, that’s what happens to our body’s energy when a negative force, like those listed above, is introduced into the system.

Another way to look at our body’s energy field or polarity is to compare it to batteries in a tape recorder, flashlight, or other battery-operated devices. The batteries that run the gadget must be installed with the positive and negative polarity seated in the correct direction. If not, the device simply won’t work. Since your body has its own “electrical system” your “batteries” need to be positioned correctly for you to function properly. If your polarity is all scrambled up, you have a GPR Reversal and it’s likely EFT tapping will not work for you until the Reversal is corrected (which we’ll cover in a moment).

B) Secondary Benefit Syndrome or SBS

This is the second and more common type of Reversal. The SBS reversal occurs when the subconscious mind perceives that it is better or safer to keep an issue (like negative emotions, chronic pain, extra weight, or a bad habit), than to eliminate it. Or, as the movie “What the *#@!# Do We Know?” demonstrates, our bodies can actually becomeaddicted to a negative emotion or issue.

After a period of time we may become so accustomed to being angry, hurt, anxious, victimized, etc. that our body is reluctant to let the emotion go. The negative condition may be uncomfortable, but if we have been in that state for awhile, it begins to feel “natural” to the body and the subconscious mind.

Since SBS is seldom a conscious choice, most people will initially disagree with you if you tell them that subconsciously they don’t actually want to get rid of their problem or issue. Of course most people don’t consciously want to stay emotionally upset or physically in pain. But the subconscious is a powerful entity, usually exhibiting dominance over our conscious desires.

For someone who has carried around a trauma, chronic pain, phobia or other issue for many years the emotion becomes a part of his or her personality or even his or her identity. How often have you heard phrases like “He’s an angry young man” or “She’s just such an anxious person”? Overcoming or losing that “identity” can be very threatening to the non-rational subconscious mind.

For instance, the subconscious might be thinking…”If I get over this issue…”

  • “…I won’t have an excuse anymore for my life not working.”
  • “…It might be scary.”
  • “…I may not know who I am anymore.”
  • “…It may not be safe to let it go.”
  • “…I won’t know how to act as a functional, non-victim person.”
  • “…I won’t get the attention or sympathy I get now.”

If someone has been trying to lose weight for a long time, for instance, and hasn’t been successful, they are almost certainly reversed on it. Consciously they want to lose weight, but their big, stubborn subconscious may be saying “Wait a minute here. If I lose weight my clothes won’t fit and I’ll be deprived of the foods I love. And what if I lose that 40 pounds and I still don’t get that promotion I need, the guy I’m lusting after or the friends I want? Maybe if I lose that weight I’ll be so attractive to men that I’ll be abused or harassed again. Or what if my chubby friends abandon me and what if I get skinny but am still not pretty? Geez, losing weight is just not worth it, so I’ll just stay fat.”Once again, remember, this is the subconscious mind wielding control over what we consciously want.

Compare On subconscious manifestation blocks: Secondary Gain: Keeping Your Reality From Manifesting.

As long as the subconscious is unwilling to let the problem go (that’s a Reversal) it’s very hard to resolve an issue, with or without EFT. When I hear someone say “I’ve had this ________ for years and have tried everything” the word Reversal comes to mind immediately. Personally, I like to use muscle testing to demonstrate this phenomenon. I have the client make a positive statement such as “I really want to let go of this anger at dad.” When I muscle test them while they say that their arm will test weak. They protest, of course, saying, “But I really DO want to get over it!” And they do at the conscious level.

We then do the Reversal correction or neutralization, then test them again, and they’re strong (see Resolving SBS below). This amazes people almost as much as EFT. It physically demonstrates an otherwise hard-to-grasp notion. People are often skeptical of this concept until we neutralize the Reversal, perform EFT tapping and they see the once stubborn issue miraculously disappear.

RESOLVING SBS

The good news is it’s very easy to fix an SBS reversal–so easy that people find it hard to believe. Here’s how it’s done: Simply tap on the karate chop point (KC= base of little finger against base of the other little finger) using a reversal phrase such as “Even though….”

  • “…I don’t really want to get over this depression (trauma, chronic pain, etc.) I deeply and completely accept myself.”
  • “…It may not be safe to get over my issues…. (use your actual problem, not the word ‘issue’)…”
  • “…I may not deserve to get over this issue…”
  • “…I won’t know how to act if I get well…”
  • “…I won’t have an excuse for my life being messed up…”
  • “…I don’t want to forgive the people that ruined my life…”
  • “…I don’t want to be ‘normal’…”
  • “…I’m afraid this won’t work and I’ll never be well…”
  • “…For whatever reason, I don’t want to overcome this problem…”

I almost always use at least the first and last of these choices which usually catches everything in between. “Not deserving” to get over something is also a biggie, so try it if it fits, along with any of the others. They’re free and they can’t hurt. You’ll know the Reversal neutralization worked when you start doing EFT tapping again and begin getting results. Reversals can be a huge stumbling block, but they are so easily remedied that we needn’t let them stand in the way.

Remember, fixing a Reversal does not fix the issue. It only gets rid of the impediment to fixing the issue. You still need to do EFT tapping as normal after fixing a Reversal–i.e., set-up and tapping sequences.

As I stated in the beginning, Reversals are only onestumbling block to a successful Emotional Freedom Technique treatment, but it is often the one that causes people to say, “I tried EFT, but it just didn’t work for me”. I hate it when that happens.

Best Regards,

Lindsay Kenny – EFT Master

“I’ve learned that I get blocked when my subconscious mind is telling me that I’ve taken the work in a wrong direction, and that once I start listening to what my subconscious is trying to tell me, I can work out the problem and get moving again.”

~Walter Jon Williams

The following video shows EFT Master and Life Coach, Lindsay Kenny, demonstrating how you can find out if you have any reversals. Lindsay employs a technique called muscle testing (which is also refered as energy testing or applied kinesiology) to tap into the subsonscious mind to retreive more accurate answers or information.

Video A. Lindsay Kenny demonstrates muscle testing on another person for polarity reversals. www.lkcoaching.com

Video B. Lindsay Kenny demonstrates muscle testing on another person for subconscious resistance. www.lkcoaching.com

Your inner healing process will take you places in your mind you didn’t even know existed. I know because I have to constantly address resistance of some kind when I tap. The truth is hard to deal with sometimes and our mind just protects us from the pain by sheltering it from us. Then, how can you deal with something you can’t confront? This is where I think EFT tapping is such a powerful technique. You can address resistance directly or indirectly. And that is why EFT tapping is one of my favorite and most powerful tools to release negative emotions, beliefs, and resistance.

Anyway, let this article be a useful tip for all EFT tapping enthusiasts when you are stuck. You can learn more about the other stumbling blocks to EFT tapping by visiting Lindsay Kenny’s website and explore her collection of downloadable tele-classes and e-books on emotional freedom technique.

Part 8: Lack of Motivation, By Lindsay Kenny

Once in a while I’ll come across a person who would rather stay stuck than change their life that is not working. It’s a sad choice, but too often true.

One particular client, “Ken”, comes to mind who had a strange sexual fetish that he really didn’t want to let go of. He finally admitted he was only seeing me at his wife’s insistence and that he didn’t want to change at all. PERIOD. He liked his fetish and wasn’t about to give it up. Fine with me. So I sent him home to deal with his wife.

Another client, “Jerry”, had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He had a severe phobia of germs and therefore washed his hands hundreds of times a day. He also showered and washed his hair several times a day. Furthermore he made his family follow the same procedures in order for them to remain “clean and acceptable”. If they didn’t bathe every time they entered the house he considered them “filthy and disgusting”.

The rest of the family very much wanted Jerry to get help and eliminate his compulsions. But when Jerry first started talking to me he made it clear that he actually liked the attention and feeling special and didn’t want to get over his OCD. When I asked if he’d like to at least get over his fear of germs he replied “No, no! Being afraid of germs keeps me safe and alive, so I don’t want to let that fear go.”

This wasn’t a Reversal, this was a choice. He didn’t want to change and admitted he didn’t even want to want to change. I don’t feel it’s my responsibility to try to talk someone into changing. I may offer my opinion and make suggestions. However, I feel I have an obligation to respect someone’s right to choose for themselves unless it involves harming themselves or others.

One of my very first phone clients was “Betty” who had been a victim so long it had become a part of her identity. She had experienced a lot of sadness in her life; she had survived breast cancer and a double mastectomy, had a brother who was brutally murdered, her parents were holocaust survivors, her husband left her for a younger woman, her son lost a leg in a car accident, she was fired from her job, etc. It seemed her life was an endless tragedy and understandably her attitude was extremely negative.

She actually whined when she talked and answered most questions with a negative response such as “OK I’ll try, but it won’t work–nothing ever does.” In our tapping we just weren’t getting anywhere. I’d already tried finding the core issues, being specific, etc. I asked her “Betty, do you really want to feel better and have your life work?” She calmly said “I’ve been this way so long I don’t think I’d know how to act if things were going right for me.”

Silly me, I was a newbie and remained undaunted, trying hard anyway. I continued with other approaches like “Tell me how your life would be different if your life was working and things were really clicking.” She said “I can’t even imagine that, and even if things were going my way, I’d just f— it up again anyway. I always do.” I eventually asked her “Do you want me to continue to try to help you?”To which she said, “No, not really. I have all I need.” When I asked her what that was she said “Sympathy and attention of friends who feel sorry for me and want to help me”. She had been telling me that in different ways for an hour. Finally, I got that she really meant it. So I wished her well and sent her on her way.

The point is that you can’t help someone if they really don’t want to be helped. This is different than people who are Reversed or skeptical about Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. You don’t have to believe in or understand Emotional Freedom Technique for it to work. Some of the biggest fans of EFT tapping technique now were skeptics at first (like me). As long as someone wants to change, EFT tapping can work for them. If they’re not motivated they will not cooperate. Accordingly, you will have an uphill battle on your hands and you are not likely to get very far.

Lindsay Kenny, EFT Master

Honestly, it is heart breaking to see friends and family suffering needlessly, but it is not our responsibility in most cases to intervene. Besides, you can’t help anyone especially if they don’t want the help and they are closed to trying any new healing techniques in the first place. Believe me I have tried to convince people to at least try this EFT tapping technique.

For example, I know of someone who repeatedly creates drama in her life. She often sulks about how her life “sucks” and she balked at the idea of using EFT tapping. Out of frustration, I told her one day that it is going to take her to hit rock bottom before she does anything about it. She smiled and replied, “Well, I guess I haven’t hit rock bottom yet.” I was surprised by her response but she was absolutely right. She is not motivated to do anything to change her emotional and physical state even though she complains about it.

Anyway, you can get the complete series of the “The 9 Stumbling Blocks That Keep EFT From Working and How to Remedy Them” articles from Lindsay’s website. Bye the way, Lindsay Kenny has a fantastic collection of downloadable and portable MP3 tele-seminars for you to learn more about EFT tapping technique. Enjoy.

Energy Healing : Three Easy Steps to Alleviating Emotional Stress
by Carol W Tuttle

Five Bonus Tips from Energy Healing 101 Kit by Carol Tuttle.

Step One: To calm an overactive mind. Place your fingertips on your forehead, above each eye.

Press firmly for three to four minutes while taking some deep breaths.

Repeat aloud or in your mind: “I am okay no matter what happens. Everyone else is going to be okay no matter what happens.” Release your hands and shake them gently for a moment or two.

Step Two: To clear tension and other burdens with a “spinal flush.” We carry a lot of stressful energy on our backs, which can develop into back problems. This technique is better if you have someone do it to you, and then you do it to them. Stand behind the person receiving the “flush.” Place your fingers at the top of their spinal column where the neck meets the back. Swipe your finger down the spinal column and off the tailbone, using the same movement you would use to swipe a credit card through a machine. Repeat the swiping motion four to five times-flushing off the stressful energy. The person receiving the “flush” will start to feel tingly inside.

Step Three: To calm your “fight and flight” energy. With so much media attention on war and violence, our “fight and flight” energy is in overdrive. Some of the residual effects of too much “fight and flight” energy can be immune system problems such as chronic fatigue, irritability, depression, anger, and exhaustion. The energy pathway that controls the “fight and flight” energy moves up and around each ear. To sedate and calm this energy, place your fingertips in front of each ear and, while pressing gently, smooth your fingers up and over the ears and off the back of your neck. Repeat this five to six times while taking some deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Bonus Tip: Protect yourself from the negative energy of others. Our energies are magnetic in nature. Emotion is energy in motion. We can attract energy to us-including the energy of people we do not even know-when we are not safeguarded from it.

Children process a lot of negative energy for their parents. If you are feeling stressed, your child is intuitively aware of that and can play a role of trying to “please” or “act-out” in response to the negative energy you are running.

Your central meridian is one of your primary energy pathways that runs from your pubic bone up to your bottom lip. It is like a radio receiver that channels other people’s negative thoughts and emotions into you. Pretend you have a zipper running up your torso between these two points. Zip up your central meridian, starting at your pubic bone until you reach your bottom lip. Zipping up your central meridian will “zip-up” your energy. You will feel more confident and positive about yourself and your world, think more clearly, and protect yourself from the negative energies around you. Zip up your children before they go to school.

Alleviating Fear & Anxiety , by Lindsay Kenny

Lindsay Kenny EFT Tapping Technique Expert

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”
~Marie Curie

Never-Ending Fearful and Anxious Times

Just about everyone on earth has experienced fear and/or anxiety at one time or another. Whether it is being anxious over making a good impression with the in-laws, giving an important speech to a critical audience, or worrying about terrorist attacks, we have all felt the discomforts of being fearful or anxious.

We live in incredibly stressful anxiety-producing times. Wars, terrorist threats, random acts of violence threaten our safety worldwide. Uncontrollable natural disasters can destroy our homes and devastate our lives. Every day, we are bombarded with sound bites, video footage, and special reports of tragedies occurring here in the United States and abroad.

Our media seems to be continually urging us to be vigilant as danger is lurking all around us. A study may confirm that foods once thought to be beneficial are now considered hazardous to our health. Everyday household items may jeopardize our safety. The threat of a new virus or disease looms on the horizon. Pollution and global warming are threatening our planet. The state of the economy and that of the real estate market have analysts worried, and so the list goes on. Is it any wonder that we, as a society, feel more fearful and anxious than ever?

Most people experience fear and anxiety as temporary feelings that dissipate once a threatening situation is under control or its causes have been eliminated. Yet for others, the dread, the sense of “uneasiness” and the ensuing physical symptoms never completely subside. It is this type of “chronic” fear and anxiety that we will focus on in this article.

Physical Consequences to Chronic Fear or Anxiety

Chronic fear or anxiety sufferers are plagued most of the time with a sense of impending disaster. Their perpetually fearful or worried state of mind, besides being emotionally taxing, is also detrimental to their physiology. It causes adrenaline and other stress hormones to surge through their body. Their respiratory rate increases, their blood pressure goes up, their heart starts pounding. They feel tense, and they grow tenser.

The effects of excessive stress, whether from internal worry or external circumstances, are cumulative. Therefore, eventually many fear and anxiety sufferers find themselves in a constant hyper-vigilant state. They may not be able to explain the reason for their fear or concern, yet they are nonetheless unable to relax. Their bodies remains tense, on high alert as do their minds. Fear becomes the lens through which they see the world.

Fear and anxiety have specific scientific meanings, yet common usage has made the terms interchangeable. Their nature is often so interconnected and intertwined that we often experience them together:

  • Both can trigger heart pounding, breath-stopping, stomach-churning, palm-sweating, or lump-in-the-throat responses
  • Both stem from similar causes and produce comparable effects
  • They are obstacles that repeatedly prevent many people from getting what they want out of life
  • Both can impair physical and/or psychological functioning
  • Fear and anxiety can lead to panic attacks
  • Both can become long-term, debilitating problems even in the absence of any apparent rational cause
  • Fear and anxiety are almost always the underlying root cause of addictions
  • Chronic fear and anxiety are contributing factors to a long list of conditions, both physical and emotional, such as insomnia, agoraphobia, high blood pressure, gastro-intestinal ailments, adrenal fatigue, allergies, depression, and low self esteem
  • Left untreated, anxiety can manifest into serious illnesses such as heart disease, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, cancer and more.

Non-physical Ramifications to Chronic Fear or Anxiety

I believe that fear is one of the greatest obstacle to success in all areas of life. Underlying fear can stop action before it ever gets started. Fear of failure is perhaps the major culprit, followed by fear of rejection and fear of success.

Most anxiety and anxiety-driven thoughts are fear-based, often rooted in the fear of losing control. When facing real danger that threatens our survival, it is normal to feel fear. It is natural to experience a little anxiety occasionally, especially about the unknown. It is also natural and healthy to express normal caution or concern. However, when you become so preoccupied with not making a mistake, so fearful of looking foolish, or worried about rejection or countless other fear-related scenarios, then you are sabotaging our true potential.

Often chronic fear originates in early childhood at a time when a parent’s behavior profoundly impacts a child’s self-confidence, security and sense of safety. Domineering, judgmental, alcoholic, or perfectionist parents can create a lifetime legacy of fear, anxiety and uncertainty for their children.

Once fear or anxiety has been imparted to a child, it interferes with the child’s sense of self. It inhibits his or her confidence, limits self-expression, and undermines his or her sense of safety and security. This unfortunately can manifest as a myriad of problems later in life as mentioned above.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

The good news is that EFT tapping can neutralize fear and anxiety very effectively and lastingly. Emotional freedom technique can bring about amazing changes, often resulting in what appear to be “miraculous” outcomes. Once we uncover the cause(s) of one’s fear or anxiety (which are just symptoms) we can eradicate them fairly easily with EFT tapping. And by balancing the body’s energy system by tapping, we are restoring calm and tranquility. Here is an illustration from one of my client files.

EFT Tapping Videos by Lindsay Kenny:

“Martha”, by her own admission, was constantly anxious over “nothing and everything” and was quite dysfunctional in her life. She had lost her job, broken up her marriage, and alienated most of her friends and family because of her extreme fear and anxiety. Although she could not remember any specific incidents that may have started her anxiety, she knew she had been this way most of her life.

I asked about her parents and her childhood, which is always a good place to start. Martha’s father, an alcoholic, was verbally and physically abusive to her and her mother. They were always fearful about him coming home. They never knew in what kind of mood he would be or what horrible things he might do to them. Even after he appeared to have fallen asleep in a drunken stupor, just as they hoped for a few moments of peace, he would often awaken in a rage and take it out on them. As a result, Martha and her mother lived in a constant state of terror.

In my experience, an alcoholic parent’s behavior is very traumatic to a child or to a spouse and it is responsible for generating more fear, anxiety, uncertainty, anger, and resentment than perhaps any other singular cause. Sadly, the impact of these feelings can last a lifetime, whereas an adult he or she may never feel completely safe and secure.

When I asked Martha to think about incidents with her father, her intensity rating rose to a 10. So, using my “Bundling Baggage”* Technique, we grouped all of the terrifying incidences together and tapped on them at once.

Martha’s Inner Healing With EFT Tapping Procedure

First, we started by addressing any reversals** (subconscious resistance) Martha had about getting over her anxiety. We did a reversal neutralization, tapping on the karate chop (KC) point, saying three times:

  • Even though, I do not want to let go of all of the fear and terror caused by Dad, I deeply and completely accept myself.
  • Even though I am afraid to let go of my traumatic childhood, I have felt this way so long, I might not know how to function without it, love and accept myself anyway.
  • Even though I don not want to get over all my childhood terrors and trauma , for a lot of reasons or for whatever reason, I completely accept who I am today.
  • Note: If when tapping you can not say, ‘I love and accept myself’ and actually mean it, then say, “I WANT to love and accept myself.”

Next, we moved to the set-up spot, (the sore spot on the chest or the KC point again) and said:

  • Even though I have always been fearful and anxious because I never knew
  • what to expect from my dad, I love and accept who I am now.

  • Even though I learned about fear and anxiety from Dad, I deeply and completely accept myself.
  • Even though after all these years, I am still like a little girl, deeply affected by fear and anxiety caused by Dad’s behavior, I want to accept the woman I am now.

On the first round of tapping, we used “these childhood terrors and traumas” as the reminder statement on each of the tapping points. During the next round, we gave a “voice” to her feelings. We tapped each point while “venting”, remembering how she felt as a child:

  • It was awful
  • I never knew what to expect
  • I lived in terror
  • I was even anxious at school, where I was safe, far away from him
  • I could never sleep in peace
  • It was not fair
  • I just wanted to be loved by Daddy, but he scared me
  • Why did he do that to us?
  • I did not do anything wrong
  • It just was not fair

Martha’s intensity had dropped to a 6, so we did a few more rounds adding in the phrases:

  • I want to feel safe
  • I want to be calm and relaxed
  • I want to trust myself
  • I want to forgive my daddy
  • I want to let go of this anxiety
  • I have had it long enough
  • I am ready to release all the fear
  • I allow myself to feel calm and safe.

We continued in a similar manner until Martha was at a zero. I then had her try to get upset at something her father had said or done to her. But she could not get upset, no matter how much she tried. That is what is supposed to happen if an issue is really cleared. Be sure to test your issues, or your client’s. If someone is tentative about trying to get upset, then he or she is not over it yet and a few more rounds are required. Once the past trauma, fear, terror, and anxiety had been put to rest, Martha felt calm, relaxed, and safe for the first time in her life. She was thrilled and said she felt 20 pounds lighter.

I usually do not stop after eliminating the negative with a client, however. I like to take EFT tapping another step with them, instilling positive aspects about who they are or want to be. This is a very empowering way to accentuate the benefits of EFT tapping and let the client voice options they perhaps had never considered possible before. I did that with Martha, asking her to do 2-3 more rounds of tapping leading her with positive phrases such as: (starting at the eyebrow point, no set-up required)

  • I am calm, confident and relaxed
  • I feel safe in the world now
  • I find it easy to be at peace and relaxed
  • I feel secure
  • I trust myself to handle challenges as they arise
  • I choose to make life easy
  • I allow myself to feel safe, confident, and secure
  • I choose to turn any fearful or negative thoughts into thoughts of peace and gratitude
  • I am so grateful for feeling safe, calm, and confident

I reminded Martha that she now had the wonderful EFT tapping or Meridian Tapping tools to use whenever she needed to feel calm. I reiterated the benefits of staying focused on the positive keeping in mind the principals of the Law of Attraction, that whatever you focus on increases. If she continued to worry that her state of calm would not last, then she would attract a new set of fears and anxiety. So I asked Martha to tap on the above positive statements every day, concentrating only on pleasant aspects she wanted to attract in her new life.

Follow Up Report

A few months later, Martha reported back that she was in a happy relationship, had a new job, new friends, and a comfortable, joyful, peaceful life.

Good Luck and Good Tapping.
